The Heineken Cup is open to clubs in the Magners League, Aviva Premiership and the Top 14. The Italian Super 10  competition also sent clubs into the Heineken Cup through 2009–10, but will no longer do so after the expansion of the Magners League to include two Italian franchises. Clubs that do not qualify for the Heineken Cup can enter the European Challenge Cup.

Starting with the 2009–10 season, the remaining two places in the 24-team tournament for the following season are filled by the winners of the Heineken Cup and European Challenge Cup. If a trophy winner has already qualified for the Heineken Cup by virtue of its league position, that country will receive an extra Heineken Cup place (assuming that the country has an extra team that can take up a place; Scotland has only two top-level professional teams, as will Italy from the 2010–11 season onward). However, England and France are capped at seven Heineken Cup places each. If either country produces the winners of both European cups, the last place will be filled by the highest ERC-ranked club not of that nation to not have otherwise qualified.a whole should be sent, regardless of nationality.

The Heineken Cup (known as the H Cup in France due to restrictions on alcohol sponsorship) is one of two annual rugby union competitions organised by European Rugby Cup involving leading club, regional and provincial teams from six International Rugby Board (IRB) countries in Europe: England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales. Romania  competed in the first year of the competition only. Teams that do not qualify for the Heineken Cup enter the second tier competition, the European Challenge Cup. The Heineken Cup is one of the most prestigious trophies in the sport and has been sponsored by Dutch brewing company Heineken International since the tournament began in 1995. The tournament was launched in the European summer of 1995 on the initiative of the then Five Nations committee to provide a new level of professional cross-border competition.

Each European country uses a different qualifying system, though in total, 24 teams contest the pool stages in six pools of four. According to performances, the number of clubs from each countries changes. The tournament is held from October to May, with various stages scheduled around domestic club competitions.

The 2010 ITM Cup  is the 34th provincial rugby union competition, the fifth since the competition reconstruction in 2006 and the first under the new sponsor of ITM (Independent Timber Merchants), involving the top 14 provincial unions of New Zealand. It will run for 15 weeks, with 13 used for a round robin and 2 for the finals, from July 29 to November 5.

The European Challenge Cup, currently known for sponsorship reasons as the Amlin Challenge Cup, is one of two annual rugby union competitions organized by European Rugby Cup. The cup was known as the Parker Pen Shield from 2001 to 2003 and Parker Pen Challenge Cup from 2003 to 2005. The European Challenge Cup is the second tier competition to the Heineken Cup. It is contested by teams from England, France, Wales, Ireland, Italy, Romania, and on some occasions, Spain and Portugal, on a pool, and then knock-out, basis. Because of the demise of their third professional side, Scotland's representation in the competition stopped. Today, the two surviving Scottish sides, Edinburgh and Glasgow Warriors, receive automatic Heineken Cup places, but may parachute into the Challenge Cup if they finish 3rd, 4th or 5th best runners up in the Heineken Cup pool stages

The ITM Cup is New Zealand's annual professional domestic Rugby union  competition, taking place from late July through October (or the first week of November). It was founded in 2006 with 14 teams, after the NPC was split into two separate competitions. The other 12 provincial teams from the NPC now compete in the amateur Heartland Championship. From its inception through the 2009 season, it was sponsored by Air New Zealand, the national airline and flag carrier of New Zealand, and called the Air New Zealand Cup. New Zealand also has five teams in Super 14 (to become Super 15 in 2011), an elite competition which also involves sides from Australia and South Africa.

In March 2010 it was announced that the Air New Zealand Cup would be renamed the ITM Cup with the addition of building supplies cooperative ITM (Independent Timber Merchants) as the major sponsor. The change came because Air New Zealand chose to concentrate their rugby sponsorship on the country's national team.
